What is Avalanche?
Avalanche is a Layer 1 blockchain platform for executing smart contracts, connecting to sidechains, and supporting Layer 2 solutions. Seen as an Ethereum alternative, it offers faster transactions and lower fees, processing up to 4,500 transactions per second—a major leap from Ethereum's less than 20. Its native token, AVAX, secures the network and covers transaction fees.
How does Avalanche work?
Avalanche uses a unique Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. Validators stake AVAX for transaction confirmation. Each validator verifies a transaction and samples other validators independently until consensus is reached, usually in less than 2 seconds. This approach allows higher transaction speed, decentralization, and scalability, theoretically growing faster over time.
History of Avalanche
Avalanche was first revealed on IPFS in May 2018 by an anonymous group. Developed by researchers at Cornell University, it was transformed into a startup, leading to the creation of the network. The native token AVAX was issued in September 2020.
